Advocacy Approach Adoption and Benefits

MTI America recently hosted an educational session on The Advocacy Approach in Workers’ Compensation on WorkCompCentral.  We want to express our gratitude to Nikki Jackson MBA, CPCU, ARM, CDMS , Susan Emerson, and Melissa Mendieta, RN CCM, for sharing their valuable insights and speaking on advocating for injured workers.

Several Corporations are Leading the way in Embracing an Advocacy-based Approach.

The advocacy approach in workers’ compensation is gaining popularity among employers in various industries. Companies like Starbucks, Disney, and Delta Airlines have embraced this approach. Emerson notes other employers are also stepping up to support their employees’ well-being and provide comprehensive assistance within the workers’ compensation system. These include:

  • Self-Insured: Self-insured employers can have more control over the workers’ compensation claims process by directly handling them to provide tailored support for injured workers.
  • Large Corporations: Large corporations have recognized the importance of advocacy in workers’ compensation and may establish internal programs or hire specialists to support injured workers.
  • Progressive Employers: Companies prioritizing employee health, safety, and satisfaction can help create a positive work culture and improve employee outcomes.
  • Public Sector Employers: State and municipal governments often proactively support injured workers by providing specialized assistance with their claims.

Benefits to the Advocacy Approach

An effective workers’ compensation program should prioritize employee well-being, achieve positive outcomes, manage costs, and fulfill legal and social responsibilities. Transitioning to an advocacy approach can help organizations achieve these goals. “By advocating for employees, organizations can address their needs and concerns more personalized and proactively,” said Emerson. This approach can improve outcomes, including faster return-to-work times and better overall recovery rates. Additionally, job satisfaction and retention rates often increase when employees feel supported and valued throughout the workers’ compensation process. Focusing on early intervention and proactive management of claims can also lead to cost savings. Moreover, the advocacy approach supports compliance with legal requirements and reflects an organization’s commitment to its social responsibilities.

The advocacy approach plays a crucial role in ensuring injured workers receive the support they need throughout the workers’ compensation claims process. By advocating for their rights, providing assistance in navigating complex systems, and facilitating access to medical treatment and rehabilitation services, advocates help injured workers on their path to recovery and return to work. Medieta said, “Through our commitment and expertise, as advocates, we can make a positive difference in the lives of injured workers, ensuring they receive the appropriate benefits and support.
